When you first get dentures, there is a period of adjustment while you grow accustomed to not only wearing them but speaking, laughing, and eating with them as well.
There are a few things you can do to help speed up the process so they are comfortable for you sooner rather than later.
- Make sure your expectations are realistic to set yourself up for success. Be patient with yourself while you get used to them. If you are experiencing any soreness, be sure to contact your dentist to find out if you should go in to have them adjusted. You can also try to remove them for a bit every four hours or so when you first get them.
- Try adhesives. Ask your dentist for specific recommendations on types you can try. However, be sure you don’t substitute adhesives for poorly fitting dentures.
- When eating, try smaller than normal portions until you get used to chewing with dentures.
- Follow your dentist’s instructions in the days after your extractions. And don’t skip any scheduled visits to the dentist.
After a few months of living with dentures, they will feel quite comfortable with little to no soreness.
